چکیده

Binocular eye position was monitored by the photoelectric technique during accommodative vergence. Contrary to previous reports indicating that accommodative vergence was a uniocular phenomenon, without exception, binocular accommodative vergence movements were recorded. The total vergence amplitude in the viewing eye was reduced, on the average. by approximately SSP, with respect to the vergence movement measured in the covered eye. Some saccadic eye movements that occurred during vergence movements were likewise reduced in amplitude in the viewing eye by up to 20%. Smooth eye movements were utilized to counteract the vergence movement in the viewing eye. This smooth movement alone, or in conjunction with a late saccade, returned the eye to the target and helped to maintain the retinal image of the target coincident with the fovea1 center for the duration of the accommodative vergence movement. Thus, there appears to be a fixation-holding mechanism which produced a general attenuation of both vergence and some saccadic movements in the viewing eye. Although this control strategy produced violations of Hering’s law with respect to the magnitude of the movements in the eyes but not with respect to the direction of the movement. it was implemented in the interest of retaining the target within the sensitive fovea1 region.

Dynamic vergence eye movements in strabismus and amblyopia: symmetric vergence.

Dynamic vergence eye movements in response to step target displacements along the midline were measured by an infrared reflection technique in 11 patients having either intermittent strabismus, constants-strabismus amblyopia, or amblyopia without strabismus. We found the absence of normal disparity (fusional) vergence in all patients having strabismus and in some patients having amblyopia witho...

Cues for the control of ocular accommodation and vergence during postnatal human development.

Accommodation and vergence help maintain single and focused visual experience while an object moves in depth. The relative importance of retinal blur and disparity, the primary sensory cues to accommodation and vergence, is largely unknown during development; a period when growth of the eye and head necessitate continual recalibration of egocentric space. Here we measured the developmental impo...

Neurons in the posterior interposed nucleus of the cerebellum related to vergence and accommodation. I. Steady-state characteristics.

The present study used single-unit recording and electrical microstimulation techniques in alert, trained rhesus monkeys to examine the involvement of the posterior interposed nucleus (IP) of the cerebellum in vergence and accommodative eye movements. Neurons related to vergence and ocular accommodation were encountered within a circumscribed region of the IP and their activity during changes i...

Congenitally Impaired Disparity Vergence in Children With Infantile Esotropia

PURPOSE We examined whether congenital impairment of disparity vergence in infantile esotropia (ET) exists in children with short duration ET (≤3 months) compared with long-duration ET and healthy controls. A short duration of misalignment would allow for a substantial amount of balanced binocular input during the critical period of binocular disparity development. METHODS A total of 19 child...

MEDICAL OPHTHALMOLOGY Association between reading speed, cycloplegic refractive error, and oculomotor function in reading disabled children versus controls

Background Approximately one in ten students aged 6 to 16 in Ontario (Canada) school boards have an individual education plan (IEP) in place due to various learning disabilities, many of which are specific to reading difficulties. The relationship between reading (specifically objectively determined reading speed and eye movement data), refractive error, and binocular vision related clinical me...
